BWSI approach assisted JIH in achieving the first LEED Gold Certification for medical institutions in APAC

Opened in October 2017, Jiahui International Hospital (JIH) is the first foreign-funded smart hospital in Shanghai. It is a joint collaboration in China for Boston-based Massachusetts General Hospital and Jiahui Health.

The 500-bed smart hospital brings premium quality and patient-centric healthcare. From design to operation, JIH has incorporated best technologies and practices to become an internationally recognized smart hospital in China.

Johnson Controls got involved early in the design process beginning in 2015, and provided tailor-made Building Wide Systems Integration (BWSI), which integrated more than 28 traditional and intelligent systems including the building automation, energy efficiency, facility management, security and VAV-centered air systems, as well as Real Time Location Services (RTLS). The total solution has improved the hospital’s operational efficiency while significantly enhancing the satisfaction of both patients and staff, in a safe, comfortable and sustainable environment.

From the beginning of the project, Johnson Controls took hospital leaders, nurses, doctors, IT, facility manager and other stakeholders together through Technical Navigation Workshop. This provided a structured, interactive process for quickly assessing and prioritizing their healthcare technology needs and investments. As a result, the hospital recognized Johnson Controls as a strategic advisor and partner throughout the pre-construction process. Then Johnson Controls utilized a collaborative approach, working with JIH and other critical technology providers to analyze, design and deploy to fully address JIH’s needs.

“Landing the ‘smart’ concept is vital for hospitals. We are glad to have worked with Johnson Controls with benefits of BWSI concept,” said JIH’s senior IT director. Mr. Gao. “Operation-oriented technologies have greatly improved our operational efficiency as well as patient experience, which is our foremost concern.”

The VAV-centered air systems greatly improve environmental comfort while reducing the risk of infections. This no doubt assisted JIH in achieving the first LEED Gold Certification for medical institutions in APAC.

With the increasing demands from hospitals and clinics in China to upgrade and become smarter, Johnson Controls China team developed and published the ‘Smart Hospital Whitepaper’ last November in Shanghai to demonstrate our Thought Leadership in building smart hospitals.
