My name is Sam, and I am a Field Service Professional.

Sam - Service Technician

How I got here
After graduating from high school, I enrolled in community college, and am currently working towards my associate’s degree in HVAC. I’ve also gotten training through Johnson Controls, so I have the technical knowledge required to advise my clients on equipment upkeep, repairs, and upgrades.

What I do
I do both planned maintenance and emergency repairs. My customers have a lot of different equipment, everything from large centrifugal chillers and cooling towers to air handlers to small fan coil systems. I work on all of it. My role is to act as a technical expert, providing advice to my customers and our sales team on the best way to maintain and repair their HVAC systems.

A day in my life
Each morning I get a list of customers who have scheduled maintenance on their equipment. I drive to their buildings and make sure that their equipment is running the way it should be, and do some routine service. If a customer is having a problem, I may get a call to stop in and check out a piece of equipment. The challenge there is to figure out what’s wrong and how to get it back up and running as fast as possible.

My contribution to efficiency
Equipment that’s been maintained just runs more efficiently. For example, I can look at a variable air volume system and make adjustments so that it uses less energy without the people in the building noticing that anything is different.

Repairs are another opportunity for efficiency. Sometimes when things break, you find ways to make improvements to the whole system. For example, I had a customer whose compressor went out. When I went out to look at the system, I realized that we could upgrade the condenser at the same time we replaced the compressor. In the end, it saved them more energy than if I had just replaced the defective part.
