I’m Susan and I work as a software engineer.

Lily - Software Engineer

I develop innovative products based on customer requirements.

How I got here
I have a bachelor’s degree in computer science. While in college, I accepted an internship at Johnson Controls, Inc. and once I graduated, I started working here full time. I have been at Johnson Controls, Inc. for about 4 years now.

What I do
I am in charge of writing computer codes for new applications and updating existing applications. The design for the new applications has to be coded and integrated into the existing products. I have to evaluate the existing product structure and incorporate the new program instructions into the existing program so that both new and current instructions work together correctly. Once the code is written, it requires testing and initial field support.

A day in my life
I come to the office each day and work with the engineering and research teams. We design and develop code for the new products and features in our building controls line. After writing the code, I test the functionality of the software that enables our products to perform new tasks.

My contribution to efficiency
I helped to develop a computer program that minimizes energy use during peak demand hours and reduces unnecessary energy consumption. Equipment is routinely shut off during peak consumption hours when the energy rates are highest. The feature, known as demand limiting and load rolling, is embedded into our building automation controls so the customer’s effort to manage energy is minimal and comfort is monitored and maintained.
